REGIONAL PARTNER: THE MASTHEADS; FIRESIDE POETS

Founded in 2016, The Mastheads is a public arts and humanities project in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. It connects residents to their region’s literary history. The Mastheads collaborates with Pittsfield Public Schools and other local organizations on a program called Fireside. The program offers poetry workshops for both children and adults.

Elementary students work with local writers and artists to write original poetry. Eventually, their work is featured in a student anthology and a community reading. Teens and adults have access to a variety of workshops too, each tailored to their group. Each workshop is a partnership with a local organization and focuses on a specific theme.

HOW THE BLACKWING FOUNDATION IS HELPING

Blackwing Foundation supports The Mastheads and their Fireside Poets Program through our Ignite the Arts Grants. We believe original poetry can profoundly impact a child’s life and give them an outlet for self-expression.

Furthermore, Blackwing Music Artist Johnny Irion adds a unique element to the students’ journey. He teaches them the art of songwriting. Johnny uses his guitar to help students craft melodies, lyrics, and musical arrangements. He helps them transform their lyrics into soulful songs.

This incredible partnership between The Mastheads and Johnny Irion concludes with a community event. Students proudly perform their songs at a local park. Watching their words become melodies and sharing their art with the community proves the power of arts education.
